headerOur Mission -

We created Atelier Autêntico to provide a collection of unique vintage furniture and home accessories, which can be ordered online and delivered to a customer’s home in one simple click.
In furniture and product design we care about attention to detail, craftsmanship, quality and design. As a retailer, we care about our customers and we try to be as transparent as possible.
In essence, we rescue antique furniture and bring it back to life. Most pieces that arrive in our workshop had a long life and most of them have seen their fair share of neglect. Every antique home décor piece we offer, is lovingly restored and saved from ending up in landfill.
When restoring antique and vintage furniture, we value traditional craftsmanship and try to reduce waste. We use ecological paints (milk and chalk paints), natural waxes and vintage upholstery textiles.

 About Us -

Ruth is originally from Germany and is a trained graphic designer. She has a keen interest in interior design, architecture, photography and hand made crafts. She also practices Shadow Yoga to keep fit and to stay sane.
Sérgio is originally from Portugal where he studied Industrial Design & Photography in Lisbon, before moving to London to work in the hospitality industry. He is also an admirer of Japanese Swordmanship – “Battodo”, in which he received his 1st grading for the sport in London.
Ruth and Sérgio met in London through a mutual friend and got married in Lisbon in 2012. Ruth was working as an Art Director for many years, whilst Sérgio was managing the front of house team at the hip and trendy Hoxton Hotel in Shoreditch. In 2013, Ruth and Sérgio decided to leave the big city and move to Mafra, Portugal.

journey_headerOur Journey -

Our journey of becoming vintage furniture restorers began with our move to Portugal. After living and working in London for many years, we decided to leave the big city behind and move to the beautiful region of Mafra, together with our cat Mia.
We bought an old Quinta in the sleepy village of Barreiralva and spent several months refurbishing it. Once the restoration was complete, we were ready to add to our existing collection of vintage furniture and found it very hard to source these in one place. Our mission to locate these pieces, eventually turned into a business and Atelier Auténtico was born. We developed a one-stop-online-shop for unique pieces of vintage and rustic furniture.
We both have a keen eye for well designed pieces, that incorporate our penchants of vintage, industrial and mid-century esthetics. With our professional expertise in design and customer service, we set out to provide a collection of unique furniture and home accessories, which can be ordered online in one easy click.

what_we_doWhat We Do -

In essence, we rescue antique furniture and bring it back to life. Most pieces that arrive in our workshop had a long life and most of them have seen their fair share of neglect. Every antique home décor piece we offer, is lovingly restored and saved from ending up in landfill.
Our aim is to be as eco-friendly as possible. The paints we use for the furniture, are low VOC and non-toxic. We are proud to be using milk and chalk paints, which are perfect for antique furniture.
Milk paint has a rustic appearance to it, instantly softening and complimenting old furniture. It is made from milk protein mixed with powdered oxide pigment to produce subtle, mellow colours. It has been used on furniture since the 18th century.
Chalk Paint® is eco-friendly too. It contains extremely low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and has no odor. Its colour palette is inspired by 18th and 20th century decor and design. It can be applied to wood, metal, floors and walls.
We use environmentally friendly waxes to finish off our painted furniture for durability and to add definition to the finish.

valuesOur Values -

In furniture and product design we care about attention to detail, craftsmanship, quality and design. As a retailer, we care about our customers and we try to be as transparent as possible. Most of our pieces stay with us for some time, due to lengthy restoration processes, and they almost become part of the family! We put time and effort into these pieces and we want our customers to be 100% happy with their purchase.
We also deeply care about the environment. We both lived in London for a long time and moving to the sleepy village of Barreiralva was partly to get away from the pollution and to be closer to nature. The problem with modern production techniques is the sheer amount of resources (material, electricity, water etc.) it takes to manufacture mass-produced furniture. It causes enormous strains on natural resources and creates tremendous amounts of waste. Cheap, mass-produced furniture also doesn’t last very long and ends up in landfill very quickly.
By restoring vintage and antique furniture, we celebrate traditional craftsmanship and reduce waste. We use eco-friendly paints (milk paint and Chalk Paint®), natural waxes to restore furniture and use vintage linens and fabrics for upholstery whenever possible.
We worry about the future of our planet and how our style of living impacts future generations. We believe that we must change our attitudes towards buying cheap consumables, which break easily, create waste that will outlive us and pollute the environment. By buying vintage and quality hand made products, customers can help break this destructive cycle and acquire something that can be cherished for many years to come.

inspirationOur Inspiration -

Our main inspiration comes from by-gone eras, when craftsmanship, quality, design and functionality were more important than increasing profit margins and sales quotas. We are inspired by vintage, salvage and timeless designs and we love to showcase styles from the past with a modern twist.
Designing a product that has meaning and is hand crafted with care and attention, is very important to us. We are continuously inspired by other designer makers, who have the same values as us.
We also love to travel regularly and experiencing art, architecture, culture, food and daily life of people abroad, always inspires us and expands our creativity.

Hi Ruth & Sergio,I bought a very old house in A Dos Negros 3 years ago and have since started to restore it. Needless to say, I want to furnish it with old, durable Portuguese furniture items. I am planning to be in Portugal again after the summer and would like to visit your workshop to see if there are any restored pieces available, if that is possible? Kind regards, Joanna
